Paper Abstract:
|
It is often argued that young people growing up in the presence of Internet and new media are techno savvy They are
often distinguished as a new generation because of their relationship to new media which is assumed to be much different
comparing to older generations. This new generation has been characterized as the Net generation (Tapscott, 1998).
However the images of Net geners being technologically savvy have rarely been questioned. This article aims at
nuancing these images, and as a result the objective is, not to prove if the images are true or false but to explore the
stereotypes. This is done by using a statistical representative study of Swedish peoples Internet behavior and linking the
results to the analytical frame of Internet skills to be able to discuss the question; - what is it exactly they know and how
is it related to the stereotypical image of the ´Net generation? The conclusion is that the Internet skills-scale did not
succeed to measure young peoples skills and further research is needed to find a way of measuring Internet skills in
order to explore the image of techno-savvy Net generation. |
